Roscigno

The toponym “Russino” appears for the first time in a document found inside the abbey of Cava de 'Tirreni in 1806, referring to a farmhouse belonging to Count Giordano who gave it to the monks of the abbey as a gift. According to medieval sources has always been known under the name of “Russino” and “Ruscigni”, the current toponym has been used from the 17th century on.
The natural beauties of this town and the spectacular traces of ancient human settlements, , make Roscigno a very particular case study. Roscigno is renowned for its ancient urban nucleus, abandoned in the early 1900s, the so-called “Roscigno Vecchia”, which remained crystallized over time as a small agricultural center.
The archaeological site of Monte Pruno, on the other hand, has aroused interest since the twenties and grew after the discovery of the “Tomba Principesca”, now exhibited at the Provincial Museum of Salerno. It must be said that during the course of agricultural work material continually surfaced, but it was not given the right weight, this until 1928, when the director of the Museum of Salerno went to the site to carry out an official investigation. Most of ancient artifacts have been found on the top of Mount Pruno, a strategic place overlooking the whole area, and allowed archaeologists to date back to the 6th century. B.C. the first signs of a stable community in Roscigno as well as the existence of an indigenous agglomeration, not yet organized, but already in contact with the Greeks that inhabited the coastline.
