Petina

The origins of Petina date back to the year 1000, as evidenced by some documents kept in the archive of the Abbey of Cava de ’Tirreni and in the Benedictine Abbey of Montevergine. Before becoming a municipality, the town was an autonomous university. Originally its name was “Abetina”, due to the numerous fir trees that characterize the area. Petina was built on the slopes of the Alburni Mountains, specifically under the Farloso and Pietralata Mountains, overlooking the valley of S. Onofrio and preserving all the characteristics of a small medieval village, featuring a castle (actually a fortress, carved in the rock, around to which the first houses were built). The territory of Petina is rich in forests of beeches, pines and holm oaks that make the area very beautiful but also keep the air particularly fresh and healthy, so it is advisable for those who want to spend a few relaxing days. The production of typical products is particularly flourishing thanks to the considerable extension of this territory rich in centuries-old woods and mountain pastures.
The production of chestnuts, mushrooms and wild strawberries is considerable, and once processed they are exported and appreciated all over the world.
