Perdifumo

Around the 11th century the inhabitants of this village, built close to the monastery of Sant'Arcangelo, moved to the valley, where a water stream flows. It seems, therefore, that the origin of this toponym is linked to its geographical conformation, from the latin "pes de flumine" meaning “at the foot of the river".
Like the monastery, the hamlet is also part of the Cilento possessions of the Badia di Cava, then passed to the Sanseverino family who left it to the abbots of Cava as their sub-feudal lords.
The village was destroyed during the war of the Vespro (1282-1302), then rebuilt and given by Pope Gregory XI to King Ladislaus in 1412.
In 1436 the Sanseverino family got it back from Alfonso of Aragon and kept it until 1806.
The hamlet of Vatolla, is still immersed in a green-green area formed by chestnut trees, olive trees and Mediterranean scrub. From its long history it is known as Vatolla was first Byzantine, then the prerogative of the family of the Lombard princes of Salerno and, from 1100, fief of the Sanseverino. In the castle of Vatolla Giambattista Vico passed, come tutor to the marquis Rocca, the years 1689 to 1695, a very important period for his cultural formation. Here, in fact, Vico deepened his studies on the texts of the library of the nearby convent of the Pietà
