Ogliastro Cilento

Located on the top of a hill, Ogliastro Cilento offers its visitors an enchanting view that stretches from the mountains to the sea. The first documented mention to the town dates back to 1051, when the Lombard prince of Salerno, Gisulfo II, offered to Lord Amato the land of Oleastrum, land of olive trees and sun, as the toponym attests. According to tradition, the town arose when the Saracens occupied Agropoli (882).
The War of the Vespers caused the depopulation of numerous Cilentan villages, including Ogliastro, so the bishop of Capaccio intervened by asking Charles of Anjou for tax exemption, which was granted on 6 May 1299, in order to favor the return of the fugitives to their village.
Ogliastro came under the dominion of Agropoli and the fiefdom of the bishop of Capaccio and, then, of the Sanseverino family who, in 1507, granted it to Galeazzo Spiccadore, who remained until 1580, after which he passed it to the Bonito and, in 1589, to from Cesare Altomare. Beatrice Altomare brought it as a dowry to her husband Romano De Conciliis and, subsequently, Ogliastro passed to the Di Stefano.
