Monteforte Cilento

Monteforte Cilento is a small town hosting about 700 inhabitants, located on the slopes of Monte Chianiello, boasting a suggestive view of the upper Alento Valley.
Its name, which recalls the rugged rock that surrounds it, derives precisely from this strategic position: Monte Fortis, meaning "fortified high ground".
Like other towns of Cilento, it was founded by the Basilian monks, who fled from the East to escape the iconoclastic struggle.
Over the Middle Ages, this small town represented one of the outposts of the Barony of Novi (it is located on the important road that connected the entire barony with Capaccio), governed by the legendary leader Guglielmo di Monteforte.
The building development of the municipality was hindered by the small building area available, located within the walls; this has determined the need to build new houses outside of it, thus contributing to the preservation of the original building heritage, which has remained intact and almost flawless.
Due to these characteristics, the historic area of Monteforte stands as an environmental context of great value, with its network of intricate streets, stone houses and some noble palaces, with their stone portals and beautiful wrought iron railings (the eighteenth-century Gorga and Forte palaces and the Baronial Palace with the old prisons).
