Montano Antilia

The name of the town derives from Saint Montano, whose remains are kept inside the Chiesa della SS. Annunziata, in a silver-plated reliquary, while Antilia means "in front of the sun", to indicate the cardinal position of the town.
The territory has been inhabited by refugees fleeing from other neighboring centers of Greek-Byzantine origin, who escaped the barbarian invasions around the 10th-11th centuries. The first settlement was built nearby a stream around which the Normans set up hundreds of gardens surrounded by dry stone walls. The municipality of Montano Antilia also includes the hamlets of Abatemarco and Massicelle. The first historical findings linked to this town date back to 1352, when the municipality was registered in the General Cadastre of the Summary. The town was a fief of many noble families as the Piccolomini, the Saracino, the Spinola, the dukes of Manforte di Laureto. From the commercial point of view, Montano Antilia was a fairly established center, in fact it occupied an enviable position, because it was situated along the Via del Sale which connected the coast of Policastro with Cuccaro Vetere.
The toponym of the hamlet of Massicelle originates from three French words, "manse en celle", where "manse" indicates a type of rural dwelling, and "en celle" stands for “united under one roof”. Initially it was part of the State of Cuccaro and only in 1811 it obtained its independence.
