Giungano

According to tradition, Giungano takes its name from the latin word “iuncus”, that meant “reed”: A legend says that the first house was built by a certain Zappulli in the year 1003 AD, although various findings dating back to the Paleolithic were found in the area. According to others, Giungano was founded by the inhabitants of Paestum who tried to escape from the Saracen invasion. Even before the ninth century A.D. these areas were not completely deserted, in fact near the current sports field, in 1979, a tomb dating back to the Roman age was found. Another testimony is linked to the battle, fdceought in the gorge of "Tremonti", between the rebel slaves of Spartacus and the legionaries of Licinius Crassus (71 BC). During the Middle Ages the town gained a certain importance and, after Capaccio, became renowned on the religious and the feudal point of view. Among the dukes of Giungano, the most famous were those of the Garofano family who, powerful and feared, exercised absolute power, making extensive use of the "jus primae noctis": their presence is witnessed by the important ducal palace, still intact in its original structure.
Giungano is surrounded by an enchanting landscape: the typical Mediterranean vegetation has made this town a pristine and protected corner of nature. Noteworthy are the Elci forest, with its thirty hectares of Mediterranean vegetation, and the verdant banks of the Tremonti river, which runs through the town, Trentinara and Capaccio.
