1247 is the year in which the original nucleus of Futani was built: a small town that was born as a fief of Cuccaro Vetere, in correspondence with the current “Vicolo di S. Antonio”. In 1547 Futani began to have a greater autonomy, even though it belonged to the fief of Cuccaro Vetere. Between 1500 and 1800 Futani shared its history and a certain economic and social development with the other surrounding towns. In 1811, following a considerable demographic increase, Futani became a municipality made up by two hamlets: Castinatelli and Eremiti. The medieval villages of these two hamlets, still well preserved in some alleys, have a great historical value. Among the most beautiful places that are definitely worth a visit, it seems necessary to mention: the Guglielmini mill, located in the Sansosto area and characterized by two circular towers; the convent of S. Cecilia, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, of which only a few ruins remain. The village is located next to the so-called “Sacred Path”, one of the many ways of faith located on Mount Gelbison. The sanctuary of the Madonna del Sacro Monte, destination of pilgrimages since the Middle Ages, was founded at the beginning of the second half of the 10th century by the Italian-Greek monks.
