Felitto

The name Felitto probably derives from the ancient Latin word “fiix” (fern): it is mentioned for the first time in a papal bull of Pope Celestine III in 1191, then in a letter from Pope Innocent IV, in which he asked the abbot of the monastery of St. Pietro di Eboli to grant Iohannes de Philecto a military fiefdom. In 1269 Guglielmo de Sancto Lupo obtained, from King Charles, the Barony of Cuccaro and Felitto. In 1308 the fiefdom came under the dominion of the Domnusco family. In 1380 it necame property of Nicola Sannazzaro of Pavia, who arrived here together with Charles III of Durazzo for the conquest of the kingdom. Around 1700 Felitto was surrounded by walls interspersed with crenellated towers and, at the end of the 1700s, it was still possible to admire two of the three gates through which the farmhouse was accessed. At the beginning of the 19th century Felitto belonged to the Carafa family, princes of S. Lorenzo: the municipality played an important role during the period of the Risorgimento.Felitto houses one of the most enchanting landscapes of Campania, the protected area of the “Gole del Calore”. Set in a deep valley overlooking the river, the “Gole” (gorges) preserve a landscape that is still intact in its wild beauty. From the medieval bridge located downstream, to the borders with the territory of Magliano, an evocative silence reigns.
