Camerota

The territory of Camerota is located between the promontory of Palinuro and the Capo degli Infreschi, with an extremely varied coastline due to the presence of suggestive ravines and inlets and low and sandy stretches to the west. The territory of the town extends from the sea to the hills and finally to the mountains. It is an authentic oasis where lush nature grows uncontamined. The most renowned part of Camerota is surely the coast, where there are beaches, coves, cliffs, towers, caves, crystal clear waters, in particular, the splendid Cala degli Infreschi, which takes its name from its cold waters
According to a fifteenth-century humanist, the origin of the Municipality is linked to a legend: Palinuro, the helmsman of Aeneas, sailing along the coasts of the current Cilento, fell in love with a beautiful girl named Kamaratòn, who did not return the his love Despite being a fortified city, it was occupied and sacked several times by Saracen pirates. On 23 July 1647 a bloody revolt against Camerota, in conjunction with the revolt of Masaniello, ended with the death of the feudal lord Paolo Marchese, who had tried to restore the jus primae noctis. The camerotans, enraged, killed the Marquis by tearing him to pieces and disseminating a little wherever I remain. In 1828 a revolt broke out throughout the Cilento. The riots were repressed in blood by Marshal Francesco Saverio Del Carretto: in addition to the leaders of the revolt, several Camerotans were executed. In the same year Licusati (formerly Borgo de li accasati) ceased to be an independent municipality and was aggregated to Camerota.
The center of Lentiscosa has medieval origins, whose history is linked to the cult of Santa Rosalia, which intensified in the 1600s after the cessation of a terrible cholera epidemic that the population attributed to the Saint. Marina di Camerota, originally a small fishing village, is located in the eastern area of the town centre; it first expanded in the second half of the seventeenth century and took its current appearance at the end of the 1700s.
